It is science fiction in that it takes place years in the future - now past - but everything is pretty much as it was in 1986. The only technological advances concern the space shuttle and, of course, the SDI. On the other side, we have the very same planes - commercial and military - following the very same procedures that led to the KAL 007 disaster so may years earlier. Curiously, world leaders communicate using telex machines. It's typical Rohmer - bad, but in interesting ways.
