I think you'll be amused to learn that his other Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge titles, A Living Apparition and The Sole Trustee, aren't available from the POD people. Why? Not on Internet Archive, of course.

As for Allen and the Society… well, money makes strange bedfellows.Brian Busbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04120341319506205062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6747768554703669866.post-36070074689435250612014-09-27T12:13:35.421-04:002014-09-27T12:13:35.421-04:00"It's bad blood. (That I don't just leave says something about my priorities, I suppose.)

The only person I know with a murderer - two, in fact - within his family is my old friend George Elliott Clarke. A kinder, gentler and more generous man you could not hope to meet. He wrote about these relatives in Execution Poems and the novel George and Rue. I recommend both, particularly the former. I'm very tempted to read it, although your review will probably suffice.

I suppose that the "bad blood" myth has resurfaced in the form of people blaming their genes, but my parents' generation still adhere to the more traditional view. One of the regulars at a pub I used to go to was the nephew of the last man who was hanged in Britain. Without fail, after his second pint, he would launch into a chilling account of his uncle's activities, finishing with "It's bad blood. I can see myself going the same way sometimes."Steerforthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07627936539372313828noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6747768554703669866.post-48598986415464291342014-09-24T08:53:11.207-04:002014-09-24T08:53:11.207-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Brian Busbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04120341319506205062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6747768554703669866.post-3062543234008714932014-09-23T21:39:19.457-04:002014-09-23T21:39:19.457-04:00Good Lord--I'd never heard of this. Grant Allen hardly seems a great fit for a group called the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge--no wownder he didn't put much effort into it.JRSMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04430775461763521797noreply@blogger.com
