I am enjoying, but not a lost classic.BeauWnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6747768554703669866.post-71926923972551922772018-11-07T17:46:52.739-05:002018-11-07T17:46:52.739-05:00Veros Carleton! This past weekend, the book was moved again into our temporary rental... but which box?

That we now live so close to Ottawa only adds to the frustration.Brian Busbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04120341319506205062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6747768554703669866.post-58840669388506818522018-11-07T17:35:09.798-05:002018-11-07T17:35:09.798-05:00I'm sure it wasn't me whom you bid against...I'm sure it wasn't me whom you bid against for Hilda Wade. I say this though I did get my copy, the first American, through a 2016 eBay auction. My winning bid - which I believe was the only one - was six dollars. My pockets aren't at all deep, and I often fear are full of holes. Must add that the victory reminded me of the eBay of twenty years back, when such deals were common.

On a somewhat related note, the Allen I'm currently reading is Miss Cayley's Adventures. I've read only two of them outside of the actual book in other crime fiction anthologies (Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, I think). I've been making a list of the grant Allen crime novels you've highlighted over the years. WHAT'S BRED IN THE BONE and RECALLED TO LIFE arouse the most curiosity. A while back encouraged by your rave write up on HILDA WARE
I attempted to win a very attractive 1st edition of that book with a very low starting bid in an eBay auction. Sadly, I lost out to someone with deeper pockets than me. Hmm....was it you, by any chance? ;^)J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6747768554703669866.post-15325004068094425442018-11-05T23:16:33.707-05:002018-11-05T23:16:33.707-05:00I've only read The Typewriter Girl but thought...I've only read The Typewriter Girl but thought I had more squirled away. I first learned of The Woman Who Did while researching something unrelated (and forgotten by me) for a Victorian literature class. A true succès de scandale at the time, it looks like it hasn't seen print since Broadview and Oxford, two academic presses, produced editions in the 'nineties. An African Millionaire, on the other hand, is available today as a Penguin Classic. Certainly, it's more likely to be found in Chapters or Barnes & Noble.

Now, if I could only encourage a press to reissue The Devil's Die.Brian Busbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04120341319506205062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6747768554703669866.post-4054222587221800122018-11-05T14:39:29.816-05:002018-11-05T14:39:29.816-05:00Well, I always thought he was best known for AN AF...Well, I always thought he was best known for AN AFRICAN MILLIONAIRE. But I tend to live in a genre fiction microcosm ("bubble" is probably more accurate, less lofty). I had no idea he had written so much and such varied types of novels.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.com
