Though the condensed books disappeared from our home before I hit high school, I do remember flipping through - looking at the pictures, of course. Say what you will about the choice of material and subsequent abridgements, the art was of a very high quality indeed. Interesting to note that the condensed The Last of the Curlews uses T.M. Shortt's first edition illustrations. Good move - they can't be improved upon.

I'm guessing that "colour" follows RD Canada's style. Best to follow the American, I suppose, otherwise you'll be getting a mix of centre/center, defence/defense, etc throughout the magazine. I appreciate the differences. In the past, I've been paid by publishers to Americanize text from the English, Canadianize the American and all sorts of similar translations. Finicky work, but I enjoy it.Brian Busbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04120341319506205062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6747768554703669866.post-52256552909206862632013-03-28T13:03:46.804-04:002013-03-28T13:03:46.804-04:00I have always wanted to know how they condensed al...I have always wanted to know how they condensed all those books. Never thought to go through the real book and compare it with the condensed one. I always thought huge chunks were taken out, not pieces here and there. I figured the books were probably better called Reader's Digest Censored Books. Not only was the sex removed but all the violence and swearing. My paents subscribed to both the magazine and the book service so I ended up reading many of them when I was a teen: The Stepford Wives, Airport, a few Mrs Pollifax books, a couple of Gothic romances by Phyllis Whitney. Then I discovered old mysteries and abandoned condensed books of any type.

I assume that favourite, honour, neighbour, and other "our" words received the same truncation. I remember the first time my 4th grade teacher who was South African wrote "colour" on the blackboard and I said in all innocence "That says co-loor." She immediately erased the U and apologized: "I keep forgetting your American spelling."
